Department of Physics

PROFILE

The department established in the year 1987   has grown from a tiny seed into a huge tree in the past three decades. The department’s unaided wing came into existence in the year 1994 as the demand ratio for physics rises up. The PG course was began in the year 2005 which enabled the womenfolk in the Theni district, to pursue their dreams of higher studies in physics.  In the year 2014 the department was credited to have M.Phil. course. The department was uplifted as the research center by the Mother Teresa Women’s University in the year 2015. The department has reputed faculties in various fields.  There are 6 aided and 9 unaided faculties in the department with Thin films, Thin film solar cells, Advanced ceramics, Condensed matter physics and Nanomaterials as their areas of specialization.

Dr. R. Mary Mathelane, Dr. A. Clara Dhanemozhi, Dr. M. Arulmozhi and Dr. A. Jegatha Christy have minor and major projects funded by the University Grand Commission (UGC) of India.  The department is well equipped with research tools that could enable the young minds with research thirst.  Dr. Sr. S. Jesurani has the credit of presenting paper in the international conference held at Spain.  Dr. A. Clara Dhanemozhi has visited Nepal, Malaysia, Australia and United Kingdom to participate and present research paper at the international conference. Dr.A. Jacquiline Regina Mary had international visits to Singapore and United Kingdom to share her research experience. Dr. R. Mary Mathelane, Dr. M. Arulmozhi and Dr. A. Jegatha Christy took part in the international conference at Liverpool hope university, UK.  The department has reputed faculty members serving as resource persons, members in academic bodies to the institutions in and around Theni district.  Dr. R. Mary Mathelane, Dr. A. Clara Dhanemozhi, Dr. M. Arulmozhi prepared course materials and practical physics books for the B.Sc. (UG) students.

The department also has the special feature of giving individual projects for the UG students.  The department has academic affiliations with National Institute of Technology (NIT) Trichy, Gandhigram Rural Institute-Deemed University, Kalasalingam University, Arul Anandar College. It has also linkages with ISRO Kalpakkam, Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA), Koodankulam Nuclear Plant, Indian institute for Astrophysics Kodaikanal (IIA). The department has the regular practice of conducting National Eligibility Test for the undergraduate Physics students every year organized by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) Kanpur. The final year student emerged as a centre topper for two consecutive years (2018-2019 & 2019-2020). The department has prominent alumini serving in various capacities both in government and private sectors. The students are provided with ample opportunities to acquire knowledge about recent developments in the field of physics through guest lectures and intercollegiate competitions conducted by the Physics Association.  The staff have been playing a major role in shaping the future of students.

VISION

  • To build a foundation for overall development of the Department by igniting and nurturing enthusiasm, passion in the study of Physics, as a part of curriculum.

  • To involve the students to serve the community and nation through education, communication of scientific point of views and to participate in defining the future of science, technology and society.

MISSION

JAC‟s PG and Research Centre of Physics marches with the mission as “Excellence in Physics teaching and research”. The Department provides an outstanding learning experience to the students, in which they develop strong analytical, quantitative and problem solving skills, with a deep appreciation of the role that Physics plays in technical innovations and make a wide range of career choices. The Department encourages the students to foster cutting- edge Research that expands the horizons of Science & technology. The Primary responsibility of the Department of Physics is to develop scientifically informed citizens through research-intensive education in Physical Sciences and related technologies and the next generation of scientists,at large.
